Description

The Ankara pear tree grows vertically. The main branches are sparse and the side branches are dense. The trunk and old branches are dark gray, almost black, and the old branches are light gray. As fruit branches, there are plenty of buds and knobs on old branches, and spears and twigs on young branches. Ankara pear trees develop in different strengths according to the rootstock used. On pear and wild pear seedling rootstocks, the height and diameter of the trees is 5-6 m, the crown volume is 60-70 m3; on dwarf quince clone rootstocks, the height is 3-4 m, the diameter is 2.5-3.5 m and the crown volume is 8-18 m3. The wood eyes are plump, the tips are pointed, the scales are brown and tightly joined to each other. There is an angle of 25-30 degrees between the buds in the shape of a cone and the branch. The fruit buds are swollen, puffy, pointed at the ends, the scales are not as tightly adhered to each other as in the wood buds and the scales at the end of the bud are partially separated from each other. The edges of the leaves are so flat and simple-toothed that they cannot be easily noticed. The leaf ends with a large tooth, often with a brown tip. The petiole is long, yellowish green, hairless, the part that comes to the upper surface of the leaf is slightly grooved and the part where it joins the branch is slightly red. In the case of flowers, the clusters are medium-large, densely flowered and have plenty of leaves. The number of flowers in a cluster is between 3 and 9 hpw and an average of 7. It has a very light scent. The flower stalk is smooth, green, and has quite dense white hairs all over. The sepals are small, triangular, with dense felt-like hairs on the top and edges, pointed and brown tips, and the inner surface is camel-colored, densely hairy. The sepals are partially bent downwards. The petals are white, slightly pink towards the tips, the edges are irregular, especially indented on the upper parts, and the texture is rough. Although there are mainly five petals in this variety, flowers with 6-8 petals are also frequently encountered. Since the petals have long stems, the flower appears sparse. Ankara pear fruits are medium-large, large, round, smooth, seated, weighing an average of 150 grams. However, there are also quite large fruits weighing 300-350 grams. The fruit stem is medium-thick and short. The flower cavity is slightly deep, the edges are corky, and the sepals are dry and sloughed. The fruit peel is thin, soft, slightly rough, waxless, slightly shiny, the peel color is dark green-green before ripening, and yellowish green and yellow when ripening. The flesh is cream colored, very juicy, very sweet, melts in the mouth, sand-free and has a nice smell. The seed house is small, five-celled, the seeds are large, long, pointed, the edges are dark and the middle is light brown.
